Prof. Albert Leone Ganado

Professor Albert Leone Ganado is a retired professor from the University of Malta . He held the position of Chairman of the Malta Statistics Authority between June 2013 and June 2022.

Prof. Ganado graduated with a BSc in Mathematics and Physics from the University of Malta in 1964. Immediate afterwards he was awarded a scholarship and proceeded with his mathematical studies at Balliol College, Oxford. Following this he read for a Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Mathematics (Statistics and Numerical Analysis) at Oxford University and in 1971, following research in numerical analysis he was awarded a D.Phil (Oxon).

As an academic he lectured on topics such as engineering, statistics, and mathematics. He lectured in the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy and in the Faculty of Engineering. He was also Dean of the Faculty of Science for two terms: (1978-1981) and (1994-1997). At the University of Malta, he was instrumental in the setting up of a separate Department of Statistics and Operations Research.

He was the founding Head of Department of Computing (1987-1993), Head of the Department of Information systems (1993-2009), Director for MBA (e-business) programmes (2002-2010), and academic director of evening external degrees with the University of Greenwich (2000-2011). He also served as a member of the University of Malta Senate and Council between 1993 and 1997.

Aside from the academia, Prof. Leone Ganado provided consultancy services to various organisations both in Malta and abroad. He was a member of the Government Advisory Board Committee on Computerisation, represented Malta at UNESCO on matters related to IT and was consultant to several leading software companies and government bodies. Prof. Leone Ganado was also a member of the Malta Council of Science and Technology.

Prof. Albert Leone Ganado has supervised over fifty research MSc students and M.Phil students at the University of Malta. He has published several academic articles and is currently working on a book about Socio Technical Risk Management Issues in ICT.
